About Craig Allen Hecht

Craig Allen Hecht is a lifelong musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, and the creative force behind Icebox Studios.

Based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Hecht has spent decades making
music that refuses to stay inside one particular genre—or even under one particular name.

His musical journey began at an early age. At five, his father introduced him to the ukulele because his hands were too small for a guitar.

Growing up in a musical family, Craig's weekends often included informal jam sessions with his parents, where guitars, organ, and even coffee cans became instruments.

His first electric guitar was a Montgomery Ward Airline, played through his father's vintage Supro tube amplifier.

Those early experiences planted the seeds for a lifetime devoted to music.

As a young musician, Hecht played in numerous basement and local bands before joining his first cover band, The Companions, at nineteen.

What followed was a roughly 37-year journey through the world of live music, performing the songs of other artists in clubs, bowling alleys, and venues throughout the region.

Among the many groups he played with, The Express Band holds a special place in his musical history. He spent more than two decades with the band and considers it the group he is proudest to have been part of.

But throughout those years of performing other people's music, Craig was always writing his own.

Long before home recording became commonplace, he began creating original music with a modest four track setup, drum machine, guitar, and synthesizer.

His songwriting and recording eventually grew into what became Icebox Studios, his personal musical laboratory and home for an ever-expanding collection of songs and recording projects.

One of the most important chapters in Hecht's creative life began when he met musician and songwriter Scott Halverson.

The two quickly discovered a shared passion for creating music and began collaborating
on a variety of projects, eventually forming The 3rd Bridge.

Their work combined elements of acoustic rock, classic rock, progressive music, funk, and more, while exploring themes of peace, love, spirituality, and human connection.

The loss of Halverson to cancer in 2016 profoundly affected Hecht, but it did not end their musical collaboration.

Craig continues to carry the spirit of The 3rd Bridge forward, including putting music to
Scott's unfinished lyrics while continuing to write new material inspired by the project's original message of Peace, Love and Light.

Their album Two Friends was released in 2024, preserving another chapter of their
musical partnership.

As Icebox Studios developed, Hecht discovered another way to express his creativity: he didn't need every song to sound like the same artist.

Instead, he created different musical personalities and fictional groups to explore different styles, characters, and ideas.

His growing musical universe has included The WeeKnees, Breanhammer, Screwdrivers to Ears, C-Rage,the Icebox Studios All-Stars, Texan Betty, Gurn Blanston and the Funkymuffins, BaaBaa and his Black Sheep, and collaborations with artists and characters such as Dirty Dann and the Muddpuppies.

These names aren't simply aliases—they represent different sides of Hecht's musical personality. One project might lean toward hard rock or progressive music, another toward funk, another toward comedy or novelty music, while another might explore acoustic, pop, experimental, or cinematic ideas.

The result is an eclectic catalog that can move from heartfelt ballads to heavy rock, funk, progressive music, classic rock, polka, and deliberately outrageous musical storytelling.

In recent years, Hecht has also released an extensive body of music under his own name. His catalog includes albums such as Surviving the New Normal, The Terror of Cluckzilla, Guitarsaber, Mental Hygiene, and Captain Midnight and Other Tall Tales, along with numerous singles and collaborations.

His music frequently combines serious musicianship with a strong sense of humor and imagination. Songs and projects can be wildly inventive, humorous, surreal, or theatrical while still being grounded in Craig's love of melody, guitar-driven rock, and classic songwriting.

That spirit is evident in the continuing stream of releases coming from Icebox Studios.
Recent recordings include The Temple of the Sun with Jim Elander, Analog Man (In a Digital World), The Final Verse, The Lightning Kid, The Dragonriders, Ashen Light, and the 2026 single Blink of an Eye.

Hecht's musical influences are as diverse as his catalog, with artists such as Brian May, Ty Tabor, Zal Cleminson, Roy Clark, and the classic hard-rock sounds of the 1970s helping shape his approach to guitar and songwriting.

At the heart of it all, Craig Allen Hecht remains a musician who simply loves making music. After decades of performing, writing, recording, collaborating, experimenting, and occasionally inventing entirely new musical identities, he continues to treat Icebox Studios as an open-ended creative playground.

Craig Allen Hecht isn't just one artist with one sound. He's an entire musical universe—one
songwriter, many names, countless songs, and a lifetime of stories still waiting to be recorded
